REVIEW: The Constant by Rachel Higginson

OMG! OMG! OMG! I'M STILL REELING FROM THIS BOOK! I can't believe it!! I'm in such a book slump after reading this, it's not even funny. OH MY GOD I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT NOW!

When I was approached to receive an ARC of this book by one of my favorite author of all time, of course I said yes! Knowing that the genre will be a bit different that what she's written before, I still held hope I'm going to love it just as much as her other books. This book, it just blew me away. It suck me in from the first page, and I read it literally in one sitting until 3 in the morning. That's how good this book is. I just can't get enough!

The story is about Caroline, a single mother that lives in small town Frisco with her daughter and best friend, Frankie. We understand Caroline and Frankie's fear and struggle to stay grounded, to not attract anything suspicious because they're both runaway from the Russian bratva, a syndicate that was thrown into their life by fate for as long as they can remember. Suddenly, Caroline met her past, Sayer. He is the person she is so scared to meet again, just because she loves him so much but is conflicted about his choices. I totally fell in love with Sayer. I don't think words can describe how much I just ADORE him! He's a beautiful person, a very loving, very protective, yet at times very flawed character that at first I don't know if I like him, but as the book progress he's just the best man for Caroline EVER. Their love is so so beautiful and I just want more. This book has a really slow-pace and build up, I have to warn. Because we didn't get to meet the hero until about 30%-ish of the book. But I'm telling you. Just hold on and trust the author! I don't think I can divulge too much without revealing anything, but honestly this book literally has everything that I could ask for.

It's a second-chance romance, set between the past and present so we can better understand Caroline's choices and circumstances, and it's just so good I can't get enough. Be warned though, this book has a cliffhanger and if you hate cliffhangers, I suggest waiting until the second book comes out in February to read it because I can't stop thinking about this book and I need the second one like right now!

Once again, Rachel Higginson never dissapoints. I just can't wait for the conclusion of Caroline and Sayer's story!

EXCERPT
His mouth was on mine before I could answer. Bruising, punishing… defeating me. I was so surprised I could only stand there and let him kiss me.
But that didn’t stop him. His lips moved over mine in a way they never had before. This wasn’t the sweet, gentle familiar of kids that had fallen in love as kids. This was a man that had spent five years in prison alone, abandoned, hardened. This was his shocking transformation on display. His muscled arms and broad chest. His darker, more serious eyes and the hard, chiseled jaw. This was the man that had gone through hell and survived.
“Come on, Caro,” he growled against my lips, shaking my arms roughly at the same time. “Fight back.”
My mouth responded before my brain could figure out what he meant. On a gasp, his tongue was in my mouth, coaxing me to kiss him back, reminding me of how explosive we were together, seducing me into a world I did not want to go.
